The Coton de Tulear is an amazing rare breed of companion class dog that originated on the island of Madagascar where they were bred for several centuries for their gentleness, temperament, and appearance. Cotons are known for their intelligence, for their charming personalities, and for their suitability as a companion for condo and apartment dwellers as they do not require a lot of space. They are the perfect family pet for people who suffer from allergies as they produce no dander. They are an excellent therapy dog and are good companions for both young and old alike.
I met my first three Cotons in the home of a friend and was instantly smitten. I had never met any dogs so loving, so affectionate, and so endearing. Upon making the decision to breed Coton de Tulears in July of 2001, I decided it was best to breed only a few dogs, carefully selected for temperament, health, and suitability as a companion animal as well as for their beauty and conformation to the standard.
Having a close relationship with each of my Cotons is extremely important to me so I have raised each one as a member of my family. We live together in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, in the hills of Walden, in a small cottage close to the banks of a babbling brook on seven acres of mostly wooded land where my Cotons have contact with other people and can also enjoy the quiet of nature. I initially began with two females and one male: Zephyr, Tres, and Shackleton with Sweet Rosie joining us in 2004. All of these original and much beloved Cotons have retired. My current Coton family includes several new and equally wonderful members carefully selected from the bloodlines of champions from around the world, chosen for health and temperament as well as for beauty and conformation, resulting in combinations that are unique to Cedarwood Cotons and carry some of the highest quality genetic traits found in Coton de Tulears today.
